Fat Transfer

Fat Transfer for Breast and Body Contouring

Our clinic has considerable experience with fat transfer for facial enhancement. The equipment and techniques are now available in our clinic for Fat Transfer Breast Augmentation. Ideal candidates for this procedure are patients with youthful breast skin and no breast or nipple laxity. For most patients, a maximum of one cup size of augmentation can be achieved with fat grafting. The amount of fat required for Fat Transfer Breast Augmentation can be substantial. For this reason, good candidates for Fat Transfer Breast Augmentation should also have a sufficient amount of body fat. The fat is removed using a special liposuction technique that minimizes trauma to the fat. Regions of the body that are good donor sites for graftable fat include the abdomen, love handles, inner and outer thighs and the arms.

The Fat Transfer Breast Augmentation procedure takes significantly longer to perform in the operating room compared to a breast augmentation using implants. Touch up surgery is sometimes required in order to balance the appearance between the two breasts.  Longevity of the transferred fat graft is unknown, so additional treatments may be necessary to obtain the desired cosmetic outcome.  Because the transferred fat is living fatty tissue, fluctuations in body weight can affect fat transfer graft volume over time.

Breast tissue that has received Fat Transfer can develop calcifications that are present on mammography. For this reason, it is important that woman continue to receive an annual screening mammogram after Fat Transfer Breast Augmentation. Additionally, women at high personal risk for breast cancer (BRCA gene positive, strong family history) should forego Fat Transfer Breast Augmentation in order to minimize the number of extraneous breast calcifications they have on mammography. To date, there is no evidence that Fat Transfer to the breast is a causative factor for breast cancer.  Additionally, there is no evidence that transferred fat interferes with the ability of breast imaging techniques (mammography, breast MRI) to detect breast cancers.

In summary, Fat Transfer to the breast can be considered a safe method of breast augmentation and correction of breast defects associated with various medical and surgical conditions.
