Body Contouring
Liposuction
The male and female body distribute excess body fat in differently. For both men and women, liposuction can be used to diminish the volume of fat in certain anatomic locations, and improve the overall body contour immensely. Its a powerful technique when used in the appropriate patient. Liposuction is not a safe means of weight-loss, and is never a replacement for healthy diet management and a sound exercise routine. In fact, the best results with liposuction are seen in patients close to their ideal body weight that have 'stubborn' foci of fat distribution that can be significantly improved with liposuction. Men are at a bit of a disadvantage in this regard, as they tend to deposit some excess body fat in the intra-abdominal compartment, where it is inaccessible to liposuction. The maintenance of a stable body weight and routine exercise habits help enhance the post operative look.
Dr. Sattler works with some excellent dieticians and exercise trainers that can help you pre and post-operatively. He will be happy to make a referral for you as part of your individualized cosmetic treatment plan.
Briefly, liposuction is a procedure done while the patient is asleep. Small cannulae (tubes) are used to evacuate fat in regions that need therapy. Great care is used to limit liposuction in other regions that are known to result in contour deformities. It is essential that the surgery be done with close attention to the amount of fat removed, and the amount of fluid replacement that you are given peri-operatively. For this reason, Dr. Sattler always does liposuction in the operating room with an M.D. anesthesiologist present. Liposuction can be done in combination with other procedures. When a procedure is lengthly, or a significant amount of liposuction is done, patients may be admitted to a post-operative care unit overnight for observation. If multiple regions need liposuction, then the procedure can be broken down into steps that can be completed during a couple of separate procedures. Patient safety is of critical importance.
Dr. Sattler asks his patients to remain active during the immediate post operative period, as this helps to prevent deep-vein thrombosis (DVT) and speeds recovery. Additionally, you will be asked to a wear a light compression garment (like Spandex) for 2 weeks post operatively to help maintain your new shape.
