Some breast augmentation patients present with undefined infra-mammary folds. This fold beneath the breast marks the visual border between the breast and upper abdomen. In some patients, this anatomic structure is not well defined. We have found this anatomic variant especially common amongst Asian females. When planning a breast augmentation for an Asian patient with an poorly defined infra-mammary fold, the position of the surgical scar is critically important. The implant itself will create a defined infra-mammary fold, but the surgical scar must remain within the fold to be concealed from view. This is important with Asian skin types, as surgical scars can be darker than the surrounding skin for several months after surgery. This patient was treated with a 295 cc smooth, round moderate profile silicone implant in the dual-plane position via a carefully planned infra-mammary incision. She is delighted with her new look !
